All Cellos

1/ 8 Eastman

Eastman model 100 is a carved cello (maple and spruce) and set up with an Aubert bridge, Wittner tailpiece and Pirastro Chromcor strings. It has a string length of 48.7 cm, upper bouts 25 cm, lower bouts 31.3, body length 53.5. This cello may be available for rent.

1/4 Scotti

Scott Cao's "Scotti" cello is our most affordable carved instrument. The cello is made by apprentices in the Cao workshops and finished with a spray varnish. It's set up here with a better soundpost, a Despiau bridge, Wittner tailpiece and Spirocore strings. The string length of this cello is 54.5 cm, upper bouts 28 cm, lower bouts 37 cm, body length 59.2 cm. This instrument may be available for rent.

3/4 Quintus

Quintus carbon fiber cello is available for rental in 3/4 size. Carbon fiber is a strong, resonant material which is particularly well suited to string instruments, providing a good-sounding resonant cello that is unusually durable -- not indestructable. Composite pegs or Pegheds minimize problems of sticking or slipping pegs, and the cello is insensitive to temperature changes, can't get an open seam. It is heartier in school settings since it is unlikely to crack. Because they are fun and easy to play and have good tone make, it's a great instrument for parents who don't want to sacrifice sound but want a less fragile instrument. Rented with a Coda bow and a Bobelock padded bag.

Andreas Eastman 200

We have in 7/8 size an Andreas Eastman model 200. With a playable string length of 66.5 cm and body length of 71 cm it is an excellent choice for players in a height range of perhaps 5'2" up to 5'5". While other factors like mobility or stiffness in the hands matter, height is a good guideline. This cello is set up with Evah Pirazzi A and D strings, Prim G and C with an Akusticus tailpiece providing good sound and projection in this price range. A new soundpost has been made for this cello, it has a French bridge and really sings! The varnish is hand-applied, amber in color, and shows off very pretty flamed maple. While bows do not come in 7/8 size, we can suggest some lighter-weight 4/4 bows which would complement the cello and should be quite comfortable for the cellist selecting this size instrument.

Andreas Eastman 205

Andreas Eastman model 205 cello is hand crafted from European tonewoods and finished with a hand-applied varnish in a medium brown shade. Shown in the photos is the Montagnana pattern but it is also available in the narrower Strad pattern. This cello is generally set up with a Wittner tailpiece having integrated fine tuners, ebony pegs and a Despeau French bridge. We may leave the original endpin or upgrade with a New Harmony in carbon fiber. String setups can vary widely in price and tone, but the goal is always to have a strong, balanced tone across all strings. Attention is given to all aspects of the cello including fingerboard, soundpost and bridge quality and placementso you have an instrument that is comfortable to play and satisfying to the listener.

Andreas Eastman 305, 315

The model 305 is made in China from Chinese tonewoods, whereas the wood for the 315 is European. The varnish usually has a reddish tone and is applied to give the appearance of an antique instrument. There is usually a high degree of flaming on the back. As you move up in price, the wood is a little older, higher quality. Our setup usually includes a Wittner tailpiece, a carbon fiber endpin, and we don't always know string selection until we start playing/tweaking the cello to check for balance and tone. This model cello projects well and tends to sound "played in" quicker than many other instruments. Prices for 4/4 start about $2150.

Beijing

This nameless carved cello come from a workshop in China and is very popular here because you get such good value for the cost. The tonewood is a higher grade than our entry level cellos, and they play in beautifully over time. Students and adult amateurs who are trying to keep the price under $2000 while getting the most for their money are very happy with this instrument. We have set them up with a variety of parts from geared Pegheds to angled carbon fiber endpins as well as a variety of string brands. This cello can carry you a number of years before you may feel the need to upgrade. Most popular in 4/4 and 7/8, it is available in smaller sizes for students wanting a higher grade than entry level without breaking the bank.

Doetsch

Doetsch cellos in 4/4 start at $3300, depending on setup, and smaller sizes to 1/4 are available at lower prices. Made of European tonewoods and finished in the US, the Doetsch is a reliable instrument, mellow in tone, and a dark antique varnish that wears well. It is a good choice for students serious about their studies and are looking for a better instrument than the usual "student" cellos available. Adult cellists who intend to keep this isntrument for a good long time may want to consider the Harmonie tailpiece and/or New Harmony carbon fiber endpin which offer tonal and aesthetic improvements over the standard issue Wittner and steel endpin. These cellos respond well to a wide range of strings.

Frederich Wyss

Wyss is one of the better cellos we offer here. Formerly made in Switzerland, the cellos are now meticulously crafted in Germany from fine European tonewoods. We order both Strad and Montagnana patterns, and set each one up a little differently. Most will get a Harmonie d'Bois tailpiece, some will get a 5-degree angled New Harmony carbon fiber endpin. Larsen, Pirazzi, Jargar are among the options for the upper strings; good candidates for lower strings include Flexocore, Spirocore tungsten, Helicore. This is a very nice choice for an advancing cellist and is capable of producing strong sound and rich overtones.

Heinrich Gill 304

Gill's model 304 is made in Germany from aged tonewood, graduated and finished by hand with a spirit varnish. Cellists who are ready to move up from their rental instruments and want a cello capable of more depth of tone, enabling them to produce a broader range of sound should try this instrument. A more affordable setup may include an Akusticus or Wittner tailpiece with metal endpin, a higher-end setup can include a Harmonie wood tailpiece with a New Harmony carbon fiber endpin set. Strings are always selected to suit the instrument, and tweaked to suit the player. Bridge and soundpost are carefully fit, fingerboard planed as part of our standard setup.

Heinrich Gill 334

The model 334 is made in Germany from aged select tonewood, graded and finished by hand with a spirit varnish. While categorized by Gill as a student instrument, we consider it for serious, dedicated students who want more than the entry-level instrument. It is a responsive cello with good overtones and projection, easy to move on and satisfying at earlier levels of play, yet capable of more as you advance. Back and ribs have pretty flaming, and the cello has a medium brown color with slight antiquing. Ebony pegs, Wittner tailpiece with integrated fine tuners, metal endpin are part of the setup, with variations in string selection.

Heinrich Gill Concert

We offer both models 364 and 374 for advancing students and adult amateurs. These cellos are made in Germany, graduated and spirit varnished by hand. The backs are nicely flamed maple and the tops carved from aged spruce. Cellos have fine boxwood or ebony pegs with a matching Harmonie tailpiece, or Akusticus if it seems to bring out the tone more. Each cello is unique, and variations in setup and string selection reveal another possibility in sound. The attention to bridge and post make for a responsive, resonant instrument with nice action, good projection and volume. These cellos range in price from about $6000 to $7500 and may be ordered in 4/4 and 7/8 size

Ivan Dunov

If you are looking for a European cello under $3000, we recommend the Ivan Dunov 401. Crafted in Romania from European tonewoods, finished in the US with an antique spirit varnish, the Dunov produces a warm and mellow tone. We usually set up this instrument with a French bridge, Wittner tailpiece and select from a variety of steel strings to achieve the best balance, tone and projection. A carbon fiber endpin is a popular option. Available in 4/4, and some fractional sizes at lower prices.

New Cleveland

Made in 1998, this honey-colored David Mahov is in beautiful condition, with a very pleasing tone and strong projection. Setup includes an Akusticus tailpiece because it enhances the tone more than other tailpieces we tried. It has steel strings by Kaplan and Chromcor Plus, a French bridge with nice action. Easy to move around on, this cello is a nice choice for an advancing cellist.

Samuel Eastman

Samuel Eastman 100 is one of our entry level carved cellos and is available in sizes from 4/4 down to 1/10. The instruments are made in China, and set up here. The most economical setup includes a Wittner tailpiece, oftentimes A and D strings by Crown, G and C strings by Prim. A better setup would involve higher quality strings, possibly a carbon fiber endpin. This tends to be a very bright sounding cello, projects well. Our attention to bridge and fingerboard insure the cello is responsive and easy to play. Plan on about $1,200 for 4/4 to 3/4 size, less for smaller sizes.

Scott Cao 750

This Cao is a great option for students who do not want an entry level instrument but aren't ready to venture into the $5000 range. Each cello is handmade in China under the supervision of award-winning luthiers. They use choice tonewoods, quality varnish and attention to detail in grading that produces an instrument with solid, rich sound when played in. Components may include an Akusticus or Wittner tailpiece with integrated fine tuners, and a New Harmony carbon fiber endpin. The bridge and post are tailored to the instrument for good resonance and action, making the cello easy to move around on. We like the Davidoff model, pictured here.

Wilhelm Klier

Wilhelm Klier is a good instrument for the advancing student. The cello is made in Germany of European tonewoods and finished in a dark antique varnish. Klier is noted for its rich tone and projection. The bridge and post are always tailored to the instrument for good resonance and comfortable action, and the fingerboard checked and adjusted if necessary. A more economical setup would include a Wittner metal tailpiece and metal endpin, whereas the premium setup would consist of a Harmonie wood tailpiece, New Harmony carbon fiber endpin and fitting, and of course a string selection that provides balance, clarity, and pleasing tone. We usually offer the Strad pattern, though Guarneri is also available. Cellos are available in 4/4, 7/8 and 3/4 and prices will vary with size and setup.

Wultur

From the Cailin Wultur workshop in Reghin, Romania comes this Guarneri pattern cello. Crafted from aged Carpathian maple and spruce, carefully graded and varnished, this cello is responsive with very pretty tone and strong projection. This maker is new to us and we believe it will be a very good instrument for those students moving up from their starter cello, advancing in repertoire.
