Cello strings are available with three basic core materials: steel, gut, synthetic. Steel strings are the most stable; they do not stretch like gut and synthetics so they maintain their pitch immediately upon installation. There are a variety of steel cores, from single strand to multiple, and those can be braided, twisted or otherwise configured. A and D strings are wound with either chrome, titanium or nickel while G and C strings have windings of chrome, silver and/or tungsten. The possible combination of inner core and outer winding coupled with tension variations (low, medium and high) lead to many options when shopping for strings.
