5-String Cello
Having received inquiries about converting a cello to a 5-string, we took a new 4-string to Chuck Herin of PegHeads fame. He installed Pegheds and made a special fingerboard that obviates the need to replace the neck. It is wider with a radius that allows for standard spacing between all strings. The minimal overhang of the fingerboard can be seen in the back view of the cello, but it in no way interferes with playing. You don’t make contact with the edge, and cellists who have tried the cello like the fact the neck remains thin. This is a prototype. The idea of the conversion is to take a cello you know and love, but want to add the 5th string.

1/2 size Andreas Eastman model 600 (2001)
We first sold this cello in 2001, and after being with families in NY and SC, it’s looking for a forever home. I say that because we stopped working with the small cellos, and are not going to able to trade it up to the next size. It may be a wonderful addition to a studio or school with a constant supply of 1/2 sized cellists. PegHeds have just been installed for effortless and stable tuning. Original endpin fitting was replaced with a composite by NHM, and removable endpin is 21.5″ Wittner tailpiece. Not all 1/2 size cellos have the same dimensions and contours. Oh, this specific model is still made by Eastman but not in small fractional sizes anymore.

1/4 size Andreas Eastman 200 cello outfit
This 1/4 size Andreas Eastman cello was made in 2003 and has been in the hands of people who took very good care of it. It is paired with an octagonal German bow stamped Jos. Martin, made of brazilwood with a full-lined ebony frog, weight ~ 66 grams. Keeping in mind dimensions for the same “size” cello can vary with each maker and style, I can tell you this is a smaller 1/4 than some others. The back length is 59 cm (12 1/4″), the upper bouts are 27 cm (10 5/8″), the lower bouts are 34 cm (13 5/8″) and the playable string length is 53.5 cm (21 1/8″). It’s important to note that a narrow cello will be easier for some kids with shorter legs to get comfortable at than a wider-bottom cello . A purple Bobelock bag completes the outfit.
