Johann Knilling

Cello bearing the label of Johann Knilling, Mittenwald, but the year is questionable.  Believed to be 19th century.  Cello has undergone restoration and is a healthy instrument.  Setup includes boxwood Pegheds, custom tailpiece, French bridge, NHM fitting with solid CF endpin, Perpetual Edition strings.

Back length 755,  Upper bouts 340 mm, Lower bouts 425 mm, String length 695 mm

    Vivo’s copy of a 1777 Guadagnini, made of European tonewoods, has been a very popular cello for its price, performance, and comfort.  With many 4/4 cellos having string lengths that cause intonation or pain issues for cellists, this one has a shorter string length (685 mm), generous body proportions that work with the short back length.  We welcome you to experience this instrument.  It is set up with Pegheds, a Belgian bridge, ConCarbo twill carbon fiber  tailpiece in the harp style for a longer vibrating C string length.  The fitting is a NHM for a 10mm endpin, and this cello’s sound gets the best reviews with either a 28″ CF or 24″ Cube Acoustics endpin, though there are other options.  Strings are Peter Infeld AD with Rondo GC.

  • Horvat & Gunst

    From our Professional Series, we start with a European white cello, and our luthier takes over.  The top is removed and interior work performed by Damir Horvat, then it’s hand varnished for a beautiful finish.  Chuck Herin installs all our Pegheds.  The setup includes a ConCarbo unidirectional CF tailpiece, a Belgian bridge, Versum/Rondo Strings, and a NHM fitting for 10mm endpin (10 varieties of rod from which to choose).
