This book is something of a specialty item. In it, Janos Starker sets forth the basis of his preternatural, computer-like command of the fingerboard. The book contains a detailed series of left-hand exercises, linked in some cases to examples from the solo repertoire. Novices, or anyone unfamiliar with Starker’s principles, however, will find the book daunting and at times unhelpful. His secrets are there, but they are at times hidden. Recommended for advanced, intellectually inquisitive students who seek to apply a final polish to their intonation, or to those studying with someone familiar with Starker’s system.
The Henle edition includes one cello part which has slurs, edited by Egon Voss, and a second part bowed and fingered by Reiner Ginzel. Includes Suite 5 with scordatura and concert pitch.
